Understanding OCD Treatment: Finding Relief and Freedom
Aug 20, 2025

Living with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) can feel exhausting. Many people describe it as being trapped in a cycle of intrusive, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) followed by repeated behaviors or mental rituals (compulsions) to quiet the anxiety. While OCD can feel isolating, it is highly treatable with the right approach.
At Peace Point Therapy, we provide evidence-based treatments that help clients break free from OCD’s grip and build confidence in managing their symptoms.
What OCD Really Is (and Isn’t)
OCD is often misunderstood. It’s not simply about liking things “neat” or “organized.” For many, OCD involves:
Intrusive fears (e.g., “What if I hurt someone? What if I left the stove on?”)
Repetitive behaviors or rituals (e.g., checking, counting, washing)
Silent mental rituals (e.g., repeating phrases, reviewing memories)
Intense guilt, shame, or doubt
The cycle is fueled by anxiety: obsessions trigger fear, and compulsions temporarily calm it — but the relief never lasts. Over time, this can take over daily life.
Evidence-Based Treatment for OCD
The gold standard treatment for OCD is Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), often paired with Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT).
ERP Therapy: We help clients face fears and triggers in a safe, gradual way, without engaging in compulsions. This teaches the brain that anxiety can decrease on its own.
CBT: Together, we identify unhelpful thought patterns and build healthier, more balanced ways of thinking.
ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy): We support clients in making space for difficult thoughts while choosing actions that align with their values.
At Peace Point Therapy, we also integrate EMDR and IFS therapy when trauma or deep-rooted beliefs contribute to OCD patterns. This allows us to create treatment plans that are both personalized and comprehensive.
