Understanding IFS Therapy: The 8 Cs and 5 Ps of Self
Aug 16, 2025

One of the most hopeful ideas in therapy is that, no matter what we’ve been through, we all carry an inner Self that is calm, compassionate, and capable of healing. Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy is built on this belief.
IFS sees each of us as having many parts—some carry pain, some protect us, and some help us function day to day. When these parts become extreme, they can cause distress. But when our core Self is present, healing and balance become possible.
The 8 Cs of Self
The qualities of Self are often described through the 8 Cs. These are the natural ways we show up when we’re centered and grounded:
Calm – a steady nervous system, not swept away by fear or urgency.
Clarity – seeing situations without distortion or overwhelm.
Compassion – responding with kindness to ourselves and others.
Confidence – trusting our ability to handle challenges.
Courage – moving toward growth, even when it feels hard.
Creativity – openness to new ideas, solutions, and expression.
Curiosity – genuine interest in understanding, without judgment.
Connectedness – feeling a sense of belonging within ourselves and with others.
When the Self leads, these qualities naturally emerge and guide how we respond to life.
The 5 Ps of Self
Alongside the 8 Cs, IFS also names 5 Ps that deepen our experience of Self:
Presence – being here, in the moment, with openness.
Patience – allowing growth to unfold at its own pace.
Persistence – returning again and again, even when it’s tough.
Perspective – seeing the bigger picture, beyond the current struggle.
Playfulness – embracing lightness, joy, and humor.
Together, these Ps add warmth and sustainability to healing.
Why These Qualities Matter
In therapy, these qualities aren’t something we have to force—they’re already within us. The work of IFS is to gently help protective parts relax, so Self can take the lead. From there, we can meet our wounded parts with compassion instead of criticism.
Over time, this creates a new internal balance: less inner conflict, more resilience, and a stronger connection to who we truly are.
A Gentle Invitation
Whether you’re facing anxiety, past trauma, or simply feeling disconnected from yourself, IFS offers a compassionate way forward. At Peace Point Therapy, I often integrate IFS with EMDR, CBT, and other approaches to support healing that feels both safe and transformative.
You already carry the resources you need within you—the 8 Cs and 5 Ps are reminders of that. Sometimes, therapy is simply the space where you get to rediscover them.
